To do math is to think critically about a wide range of problems. At Luther College, students majoring in mathematics will develop as creative problem solvers using mathematical reasoning, modeling of applications, and statistical methods. Each student will:
Problem Solving: Solve multi-step problems using a mix of mathematical tools and techniques. (Critical Thinking)
Mathematical Reasoning: Explore how mathematical knowledge is learned through the deductive process, and use quantitative techniques and logical reasoning to engage with understanding important mathematical structures. (Information Literacy)
Modeling and Applications: Examine and apply mathematical models and methods to answer questions motivated by other disciplines.
Statistical Methods: Implement different methods of drawing inferences from sample data, and understand the uses and limitations of these methods.
Communication: Organize and articulate ideas clearly for a variety of audiences. (Communication)
Technology: Use appropriate technological tools to assist with the exploration and communication of work in mathematics/statistics.
